About

Ma Dang Gook Soo has been cutting noodles on South Western Avenue since 1993, when Choung Ja Lee and Heung Jae Lee registered the room as a full-service restaurant. The shop is small, fluorescent, and built for bowls rather than barbecue: knife-cut kalguksu in chicken, clam, anchovy, or kimchi broth when you want heat, and kongguksu (cold knife-cut noodles in chilled, nutty soybean milk) when Koreatown feels like a furnace. Jonathan Gold put the kong gook soo on his LA Weekly list of Korean dishes every Angeleno should know and wrote about it again in hot-weather cold-noodle columns; The Infatuation still treats the room as a reliable solo-lunch stop for hot and cold soups. Mandu, kimbap, bibim guksu, and jjolmyeon round out the board. Portions run large; many diners share or take half home. Public directories and neighborhood directories often describe the shop as cash-only, so plan accordingly and confirm before you go.

Menu highlights

  • Mandu; kimbap; banchan with house kimchi

Diners say

Regulars chase handmade noodles: kongguksu on hot days, chicken or kimchi kalguksu when someone feels under the weather, generous bowls, and fair prices. The room is tiny and crowded; cash-only notes still appear; service can be brisk if you need help with a Korean-heavy menu; leftovers are normal. Come for a no-frills noodle lunch, not a grill night or polished Koreatown dinner.
