About
Zhen Feng and Richard Stuart opened Mother’s Dumplings in 2005 in a small basement space on Huron Street, using Feng’s mother’s Northeastern Chinese recipes. Michelin notes that about five years later the restaurant moved to a larger Spadina Avenue room and became a Chinatown fixture. The kitchen is built around dumplings rolled and folded on site: boiled, steamed, and pan-fried fillings, with frozen take-home bags for later. Toronto Life, the Toronto Star, NOW, CityNews, and the Michelin Guide have all covered the restaurant as a local dumpling benchmark rather than a banquet-hall Chinese night.
Menu highlights

Diners say
People come back for dumpling skins that still taste handmade, pork-and-dill and other filling rotations, and a Spadina room that feels like a family kitchen more than a banquet hall. Michelin’s recommendation matches what locals already said about boiling and pan-frying on site. Frozen bags for home cook nights show up in regular orders almost as often as dine-in baskets.
Peak waits, a plain room, and sides that matter less than the jiaozi are the usual caveats. Diners hunting har gow carts or a full regional Chinese tasting usually walk to Rol San or book Mimi instead. Mother’s is the Chinatown dumpling stop.
