Michelin Just Added Tianjin. Eat Breakfast Before the Star.
The 2027 Beijing & Tianjin Guide gave the city 27 restaurants on October 27, with only one star. A one-day eat pairs Bib Jin tables and Selected heritage houses with jianbing guozi, mahua, and Erduoyan cake beside the new list.

On October 27 in Tianjin, the MICHELIN Guide unveiled its 2027 Beijing & Tianjin selection, the first time the port city has appeared in the Guide. The combined list holds 134 restaurants. Tianjin’s share is 27: a single One Star, sixteen Bib Gourmands, and ten MICHELIN Selected rooms. A Bib Gourmand marks strong cooking at a friendly price. Gwendal Poullennec, the Guide’s international director, told reporters that Beijing brings openness and range while Tianjin brings local tradition and regional flavor. In a Yicai interview the same week, he said Tianjin’s picks lean local, with neighborhood rooms and Bibs doing most of the work.
That split is useful for a one-day eat, including for travelers who ride in from Beijing South on a high-speed train that can take about half an hour. The lone star is China Banquet, listed in Chinese as Tingchao Huayan. It cooks Huaiyang food in Hexi. Start the day with breakfast instead, then use the new list for lunch and dinner.
Morning belongs to jianbing guozi. Tianjin’s version is a thin mung-bean batter crepe finished with egg, scallion, sweet bean sauce, and a crisp guozi or cracker folded inside. China Daily reported in 2017 that the snack entered the city’s intangible-heritage list. Ham and lettuce belong to other cities’ stalls. Lines form early, and many carts sell out by mid-morning. If you still have room, order guobacai nearby: strips of the same mung crepe in a savory gravy with sesame paste. Neither stop is in the Guide.
For lunch, take a Bib that cooks Jin cuisine, the Tianjin kitchen. Yu Quan Fan Zhuang, a long-running Muslim restaurant on Yuquan Road in Nankai, made the inaugural Bib list. A Phoenix roundup names chicken-mousse scallops and braised beef strips among the house plates. If that room is full, Zhao Da Gu Jin Wei Fang, Xiao Yu, and Jin Lu Restaurant in Nankai sit on the same Bib sheet. So does Re Hai Fan Zhuang, where server Qiao Wei won one of the Guide’s special service awards for walking guests through Tianjin dishes. Midday is for a table that tastes like the city.
Leave the afternoon for snacks people carry onto trains. Guifaxiang’s Eighteenth Street mahua, a twisted fried dough with sweet filling, is counted with Goubuli baozi and Erduoyan fried cake as one of Tianjin’s three treasures. The Guifaxiang method sits on China’s national intangible-heritage list. Buy a small box. Then sit down at Erduoyan Hui Guan in Nankai, which Michelin put on the Selected list. The house grew out of a late-Qing fried-cake shop named for a narrow alley. Glutinous rice dough, sweet bean paste, and a blistered shell are still the reason to come. Order the cake hot. Add a Jin dish if you want a longer stop. Yan Chun Lou, another Selected Tianjin room, works if Gulou East Road is slammed.
Dinner is Huaiyang. China Banquet opened in 2023 at 18 Huanhu Middle Road in Hexi. Chef Yang Zheng, born in 2001, trained under Huaiyang master Hou Xinqing and runs the kitchen with his father. Michelin’s write-up names brine-marinated squab, crab soup dumplings, and a pre-order eight-treasure duck. Jinwanbao reported that a tasting menu has paired crispy beef with a Tianjin jianbing, using sweet bean sauce to connect Nanjing technique to the morning snack. Dianping users lately average around 220 yuan a person. Starred rooms change deposits and set menus quickly, so confirm before you go.
Sixteen of Tianjin’s twenty-seven entries are Bibs: Jin restaurants, dumpling houses, seafood counters, and neighborhood rooms. Ten Selected houses mix heritage Jin names with Cantonese and grill. One star carries Huaiyang. The Guide’s app has the live addresses. After the October 27 announcement, a first day can stay short: jianbing while the batter is still on the griddle, a Bib Jin lunch, a mahua box and an Erduoyan cake, then China Banquet in the evening. Tianjin entered Michelin beside Beijing. The breakfast stall still comes first.
